What's the best time of year to go?
While the summer has the nicest weather and everything's open, it's also the most crowded time. Things are less crowded and cheaper in winter. Either one is fine; it depends on how much you mind crowds or cold weather.

How much will it cost?
Obviously, this depends on a lot of factors. Calculate travel and hostel costs beforehand and then add at least $30 per day. Expect to pay at least $4500 for a two-week trip.

What do I need to do to get a passport?
Get two passport sized pictures taken at your local copy center, bring proof of citizenship (e.g., a birth certificate), and go to a post office or courthouse. A passport costs $65.

How long does a passport last?
5 years if you're under 18; 10 years if you're 18 or older.

Do I need traveler's checks?
You don't need them, but they're a good idea. They have all of the benefits of cash but they can be recovered if stolen.

What's the difference between a Eurail pass and a Europass?
The Eurail pass covers 17 countries, while the Europass pass is only good in Germany Switzerland, France, Italy, and Spain. The Europass pass is less expensive.

Can I get an international bus pass?
Yes. The Euroline pass covers unlimited bus travel and starts at $250 a month.

What are the special circumstances for including England on my trip?
Rail travel in England is very expensive, and it costs at least $100 to travel to continental Europe. We suggest that you skip England when backpacking.

Do I need to reserve rooms at hostels ahead of time?
Generally speaking, no; you should be able to find a room if you arrive early in the day. In Italy, however, you will need to make reservations in advance.

Do I need a hostel ID card?
If you plan on travelling off the beaten path, you will need a Youth Hostel International card. They're not usually required in major cities, but they're a worthwhile investment at $25.
